Tampa is on the Gulf Coast of Florida. It is the largest city in Hillsborough County and the Tampa Bay area. The city is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Greater Tampa Bay area has over 4 million citizens that includes the Tampa and Sarasota metro areas.
Tampa operated as a military center during the 19th century through Fort Brooke. Tampa was reincorporated as a city in 1887, after the Civil War. Tampa’s economy is propelled by tourism, health care, economics, insurance, technology, construction, and the oceanic industry.
The Port of Tampa is the largest port in the state, making it one of the busiest commercial ports in the US. Petroleum and phosphate are the lead materials, accounting for two-thirds of the bulk and general cargo handled by the port. The bay’s bottom is very sandy that constantly moves with the currents. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are having to constantly widen the ship channels to keep them passable for the large cargo ships.
Tampa displays a wide variety of architectural designs and styles in their local architecture. Most of Tampa’s high rises show aspects of post-modern architecture, like the recently renovated Tampa Museum of Art.
The Tampa mayor Pam Iorio began the redevelopment of Tampa’s downtown a priority. Numerous residential and mixed-development high-rises have been created. Another of Mayor Iorio’s actions was the Tampa Riverwalk, a mixed-use path by the Hillsborough River in the downtown area. Several museums have already opened or relocated, including new locations for the Tampa Bay History Center, the Glazer Children’s Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art.
Tampa has many skyscrapers on its city horizon. Overall, there are 21 finished buildings that rise over 250 feet tall. The city also has 147 high-rises, second in the state thanks to Miami. The tallest building in the city is 100 North Tampa, previously the AmSouth Building, which rises 42 floors and 579 feet making it the tallest building in Florida outside of Miami or Jacksonville.
